A ticking bomb
CHICAGO — President Barack Obama pushed hard Monday for a health care overhaul, saying the system is "a ticking bomb" for the budget that could force America to "go the way of GM" without a legislative fix.
Obama went before the American Medical Association in Chicago to declare anew that the existing system leaves too many uninsured and forces "excessive defensive medicine" by doctors worried about malpractice lawsuits. He also declared once again that he does not favor socialized medicine and cautioned people to beware of "scare tactics and fear-mongering" by critics who make this claim.
Obama did tell his audience of physicians and health care professionals that he's "open" to requiring all Americans to have health insurance, while stressing that the plan would permit continuing assistance for those who cannot afford it on their own.
Obama said that a "health care exchange" would be set up to provide additional options for the uninsured.
"A big part of what led General Motors and Chrysler into trouble," he said, "were the huge costs they racked up providing health care for their workers — costs that made them less profitable and less competitive with automakers around the world."
"If we do not fix our health care system," Obama said, "America may go the way of GM — paying more, getting less, and going broke."

In short my NSHO at this point is, instead of breaking up the monopoly of the health insurance companies, big pharma - Obama's plan is to cut costs by cutting care... I see this leading to lifestyle legislation as well as creating a huge stigma on any that require care as a burden on society. The health Czar cometh!
There is huge opposition to this plan, in the medical community as well as on the Hill.
This comment from a reader is right on, I believe.

A government in total control of medicine can determine who gets treated and what kind of treatment they get.
How do you control costs? You start by making "cost versus benefit" decisions. A lot of diseases can be cured by not treating them. Not letting those that carry the gene to pro-create. Terminate (abort) any fetus whose genes are not up to "government standards".
Does anyone remember a group of people desiring a perfect race of "blue-eyed blondes"?
Many birth defect children are still being born. Why is juvenile diabetes increasing? Because medical improvements now allow more diabetic mothers to have children. Most of these children previously died. Now they live and pro-create, passing their defective genes onto another generation.
THIS COSTS MONEY FOLKS. It will demand a government solution.
Government can CURE juvenile diabetes in a couple of generations. Simply don't let the gene be passed on.
The scary thing about this is......there are many of you who believe that would be a GOOD idea. Scarier yet, we have an administration full of such thinkers.
We're in deep doo doo!!
