Today I went to the Worcester Rifle and Pistol Club range to practice some marksmanship.. I met with a buddy and we fired a Ruger Blackhawk, .45 Colt, the Ruger Security Six, .357, the Mini14 and the AR15, both .223's.. Here is my target from the 45 revolver, which belonged to my buddy, and which I had never handled or zeroed.. This is six rounds, so you can see the double hits.. It's a pretty tight shot group, and it's pretty center-mass for 50 feet having never handled the pistol before.. What happens in the military is that they get you to master the three facets of shooting: Sight picture, breathing and trigger squeeze.. Once you have those three mastered, you go to the range and shoot shot groups of three. The shot groups tell you how to adjust your sights. Once you adjust your sights in the military, you own that weapon.. So when viewing my shot group, it's obvious that I have a tight shot group, and if you adjusted the sight up and left, I would have obliterated that orange circle... Pretty good for a gun I've never handled.. The AR we used was set up for competition and had a holographic sight with a glowing red dot in the scope. Pretty sweet.
