Up by the Winchendon Health Center is a very old water tank that is a very interesting subject for pictures, particularly because of the many leaks. This tank was erected in 1906, and the exterior has a nice coat of surface rust and peeling paint. Although it's made of fairly thick steel, it's still very scary to stand next to it and look at the exterior and the many leaks. For whatever reason, all of the leaks are up really high, so you can't tell what kind of a leak it is-whether it's rot or a purposefully placed overflow hole or rot. There is a large pipe sticking out the side of the tank near the top, so I would have to believe that this is the overflow pipe and that the leaks are, in fact, rot. It must be sound, though, because there is a mess of antennas mounted to one side of it, and it stands up to the strong winds up at that altitude.. The beautiful thing in the winter time was the huge amount of icicles hanging off of the wires going from the communications shack to the side of the water tank.. The leak that points toward the wires continued to feed the icicle and make it continually larger. Unfortunately I didn't get pictures of that. Here are some pictures of it on February 14, 2009: I looked up Hodge Boiler Works, and it appears that the building has been turned into Hodge Boiler Works Condos. Can you spot the leak? It's really an odd perspective, as I was standing at the base of the tank looking up: Interior access hatch:
