Being fat, myself, I have standing to make this observation... I ride my bike 14 miles daily-to the end of the Gardner bike path and back.. I do this during the light hours, no odd times, or anything.. I would say that at MOST, I see 6-8 people during the entire hour that I'm riding.. That's 6-8 people out exercising over the course of the hour that I'm riding.. I'm really shocked that so few people take advantage of the opportunity to walk or bike on a nice, tree-lined path.. The Gardner bike path is 3.5 miles long, so down and back is 7 miles.. That's a really good walk, and it's nice and peaceful..
Oh well, that's my rant for the day.

I used to exercise regularly and especially walking, it seemed to clear my head and help me think better especially in stressful times.
I've back slid A LOT. I've never been on the bike path although I hear about it.
With regards to what you said about the scarcity of people out on the bike path, I find that in general there are less and less people just out and about. Even kids, it's been my observation that they would rather stay in. I hear a lot of, "its boring, there's nothing to do".
I wonder if others have noticed or thought about it?
But then, Main Streets have dried up everywhere do to shopping malls and the centralization of everything from commerce to health care. That might have something to do with less people out and about...
BTW, I'm trying this new method for weight reduction. Cayenne pepper. Heard it increases the metabolism, I'll let you know.

I started riding my bike on the 14 mile Gardner run about two months ago, and I'm down from 272 in October to 229 now, and the weight is just falling off... The ride takes me about 59 minutes.. I'm loving it..
