I was watching a portion of the school committee meeting on cable last night and happened to see this women speaking in pleading tones requesting to eliminate choice of education stating that "our" kids need to be educated in the towns "tax payed" program. At the same time the board is agonizing on how to fit in the mandatory school days, due to so many cancellations from the storms and accommodate the families that have preplanned vacations.
No wonder many families choose to home school or otherwise find alternative education for their kids.

The government school system has been failing our kids for years. From trying to force kids to embrace homosexuality, by forcing normal kids to sit in classes with special needs kids who can't possibly learn at the same rate and will distract the normal kids, by restricting the games played at recess to non-contact or non-competitive games, and by instituting that stupid MCAS crap. The government should get out of the education business and privatize the school system. Sure, the rich towns will have the better schools, but you know what? Who are we kidding? There will always be losers and winners in life-something society doesn't like to admit any longer-especially the schools.. If schools were privatized, you would have a choice of which school to go to, and the schools that were plagued by low attendance would either shut their doors or get their crap together to entice more people to send their kids there.. Merit and performance would matter again. And, since you would have to pay to send your kids to this private institution, everyone would pay the same amount, unlike now where some parents don't pay at all because they don't own property. If you were paying to send you kid to school, I think people would care more and force the teachers to quit bitching about working only 180 days per year and taking a professional day every other week. Take your professional days during the summer when all you have is time.

I was talking to my niece who has a degree in education and teaches special ed. She told me that most of the problems they are faced with originate from the "No Child Left Behind".
So, in order to comply with government regulation standards must be lowered and schools become a mill where they pump out graduates.
I know my niece must find supplemental income for the summer months. She is single, has no children with one pet but still has to pay off student loans and keep a roof over her head and her teachers pay doesn't give her luxury money.
The educational needs of individual children are always different and to take away choice as I heard someone advocating really bothered me!!
One size does not fit all. Not only that, our educational system is not recognizing that their students are not going to enter a working or professional environment that has been in place for the past few decades. Things are changing - fast.
I happened to catch this report on 20/20 last week. Something to think about.
