Every now and then something happens that give me pause and makes me reflect on life.
I've had friends hang themselves, I've had friends die in car accidents, I had friends overdose, and I've had friends who just seemed to go crazy and abandon their family and leave the state for greener pastures. In each case people were left hurting and frustrated. I mean really hurting like you can't describe in words. The kind of hurt that only time heals.
Well, last night I received an email from my Alumni association that a girl from my graduating class of 1989 had died at 37 years old. Her name was Kathleen.
For some people, there are people in your graduating class that you didn't know because your school was so big, but not me. Not Kathleen. I went to a private Catholic school where the class sizes are under 200, We all knew each other. Every senior class goes on a four day retreat where you really get to know each other, open up to each other, and on the third night there's not a dry eye in the room.
Kathleen was liked by everyone, and she went on to get her degree in nursing because of her love for helping people. She lived life to the fullest, avoided the pressures of alcohol and drugs in high school, and she graduated in the top of our class.
Unfortunately, breast cancer was stronger than her. It's stronger than many great people, and it ended Kathleen's short life.
Now she's in Heaven, and we're left here on Earth to perfect ourselves and prepare to join her. Sometimes, even knowing that she's happy now is no consolation for the loved ones left behind, the kids orphaned and the lives she will never be able to touch now that she's gone. She never got to know the joy of seeing her kids graduate from high school or to be a grandmother.
It's really sad.
